چکیده

background: this study has been conducted on workers from several workplaces where materials containing lead are used during december 2006-april 2007 in eskişehir, a city of the middle anatolian region of turkey. methods: the study and control groups were occured with 403, and 97 men, respectively. after each interview with the individuals, their blood pressures (bp) and complete blood counts (cbc) were measured. the blood lead level (bll) of 10 μg/dl was accepted as cut off level for high bll. in statistical analyses, chi-square test (x 2 ), fisher's exact test, student t -test, kolmogorov-smirnov z test, and logistic regression analysis were applied. results: the mean age was 35.55±9.00 yr (min=18, max= 54) in study group. the prevalence of high bll was 10.2% (n= 41) in study group. the working on smeltery, and the working on polyvynil chloride product, and history of lead poisoning are important risk factors for high bll (for each one p < 0.05). conclusion: this study indicated several precautions and steps to be taken for better protection from lead poisoning: considering workplace medicine more seriously and particularly planning special health programs in order to raise awareness among workers for using protective gear/wear and applying routine hygienic habits, and improving the preventive measures for workplaces, and providing technical equipment for routine mac measurements in workplaces, and increasing the legal liability and sanctions.

Effects of low level exposure to lead on neurophysiological functions among lead battery workers.

OBJECTIVES Assessment of neurophysiological functions in workers with low level exposure to lead and evaluation of the efficacy of bone lead measurements in the prediction of effects of lead. METHODS Exposure to lead of 60 workers from a lead battery battery factory was estimated from historical blood lead measurements and analysis of lead in the tibial and calcaneal bones with x ray fluoresc...

Effect of Lead Exposure on the Status of Reticulocyte Count Indices among Workers from Lead Battery Manufacturing Plant

Earlier studies conducted on lead-exposed workers have determined the reticulocyte count (RC) (%), but the parameters of Absolute Reticulocyte Count (ARC), Reticulocyte Index (RI), and Reticulocyte Production Index (RPI) were not reported. This study assessed the effect of lead (Pb) exposure on the status of reticulocyte count indices in workers occupied in lead battery plants. The present cros...

A study on the effect of lead on event-related potentials among lead-exposed workers.

OBJECTIVES In order to clarify the effect of lead on higher cerebral functions, lead-exposed workers (Pb group) and controls were examined for event-related potentials. SUBJECTS AND METHODS Fourteen lead-exposed workers with a mean age of 57.1 yr (SD=4.27, range 48-64; lead concentration of whole blood ranged from 33 to 106 microg/dl with a mean of 58.6 and SD 28.6 microg/dl) and 19 age-match...

Influence of the degree of exposure to lead on relations between alcohol consumption and the biological indices of lead exposure: epidemiological study in a lead acid battery factory.

Alcohol has been shown to interact with lead to influence haem biosynthesis. The aim of this study was to define the dependence of this interaction on the degree of exposure to lead. Exposure to alcohol was estimated by measurement of alcohol concentrations in a sample of urine collected during the morning (AlcUM) (0.82 (SD 4.36) mmol/l) and in a sample collected during the afternoon (AlcUA) (1...

Occupational lead exposure among automotive garage workers – a case study for Jimma town, Ethiopia

BACKGROUND In Ethiopia, although there are numerous small-scale and medium industries which use lead-based raw materials that may pose health risks to workers, there are no workplace regulations for lead exposure. Moreover, there are no studies carried out on the blood lead levels (BLLs) of workers or on the contribution of common workplace practices to lead poisoning. METHOD A cross-sectiona...
